An accident at Bortnychi aeration station

According to the State Service for Emergency Situations the dam was broken through in idle area (106 hectares) near the permeable well 10 th April at 7 p.m. in Boryspil district on Bortnychi aeration station "AK Kyivvodocanal".

The ministry said that the dam had been broken through because of strong snowmelt and rising up groundwater. Water entered the backup station but pump was not able to cope with its volume. Water reached the surrounding area but settlements were safe. Rescuers acted quickly and protective barriers against water had been already built by 5:45 on April 11.

Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Oleg Proskuryakov said “There is no threat of repeated dam breakthrough on Bortnychi aeration station”. According to the minister, the break in the dam had been localized in the morning and representatives of the State Ecological Inspectorate were working there at that time. "There are no leakages to the Dnepr River or nearest water resources; also no threats of repeated breakthroughs"- the Minister said. He emphasized that the sewage overflowed only through the territory of Bortnychi aeration station in non-working areas. Kyiv City State Administration works under a question about funds for localization particular problem. They look how to extend the operation Bortnychi aeration station for the next few years until the construction of new modern water treatment system.

“The technical condition of dam’s sludge fields Bortnychi aeration station is fair and there is no threat of repeated emergency.” - said the head of the Water and Sanitation Sector Ministry of Regional Development Oleg Zhuchenko.
